During the last one week, the social media has been awash with reports that Americans would receive a new and larger $2,000 stimulus check later this July or August. Ever since the viral Tik Toks and internet articles and clickbait headlines, the rumor mill has been spinning.
However, just before you start making plans on how to spend that money, this is what is actually happening as well as the reasons why a fourth federal stimulus check is unlikely to come anytime soon.
The Origin of the $2,000 Stimulus Rumor
The new bout of speculation seems to be based on an article by writer Rick Adams dated July 19th. Adams in the article was speculating that politicians are thinking about another stimulus check because of inflation and popular request.
Under the article, the theoretic payments would go to:
- The single filers that earn below 75000 dollars
- Married couples that earn less than 150,000
- And dependents allowances in addition to it.
According to Adams, in case of its adoption, direct deposits could be introduced at the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026. That certainly will be attractive to many Americans who are dealing with the increased cost of living, yet the big issue is there is no legislation or government verification of it.
What IRS and the Congress have Actually said
At this point, the IRS and the Treasury Department have not disclosed anything in relation to the fourth stimulus check in 2025. Indeed, the most recent official IRS bulletin, which was issued on July 15 (IR-2025-75) was all about extensions on tax returns and identity theft protection. No stimulus activities were mentioned, although the number of online rumors keeps increasing.
On the same note, there is no bill in Congress allowing a new wave of payments to be passed through. There is no budgetary allocation available and statements of lawmakers do not suggest that the idea is at least under consideration.
The fourth Stimulus Check Is Finished Years Ago
So, what was the actual history of the federal stimulus checks:
- First check (MarchApril 2020): A maximum of $1,200 per adult another amount of $500 per child
- Second check (January 2021): Max. 600 dollars per individual
- A third check (March 2021):Up to 1400 dollars per individual
These were among relief check payments regarding the pandemic support such as the CARES Act and the American rescue plan. No new legislation expanding the federal stimulus has passed since that time and the deadline to claim back unclaimed stimulus funds through the Recovery Rebate Credit passed on April 15, 2025.
IRS bulletin IR-2024-314 estimated about $2.4 billion of the financial aid was unclaimed and distributed until January 2025, however, the money did not represent new payments but simply unused third round funds.
The DOGE Dividend by Trump Is Proposed Only
The other piece of the rumor is the former President Donald Trump who proposed in February 2025 a one-time payment of DOGE to the people a lump sum of 5,000, which was referred to as a DOGE dividend to the taxpayers. They were supposed to run the idea to recoup the putative savings that Elon Musk has unearthed at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Though catchy, the proposal lacks legislative backing, and an evident way towards it. It is not bound to any actual federal blueprint, and there is no development period and source of funding. At the moment it remains purely an idea, not a reality.
The story is different with State-Level Relief Is
It should be mentioned that there are states that delivered their own version of inflation relief within the last year. These are not federal stimulus checks, but they could add up to little one-time payments depending on certain conditions.
For example:
- New York provided residents with incomes above the requirements with checks each worth between a $200 and a $400.
- Pennsylvania, Georgia, Colorado have also offered rebates to any qualified taxpayers or house owners.
All those programs operate at the state level, and the rules and deadlines vary. Although beneficial to certain households, they are not what one may call a nationwide stimulus as federal checks offered during the pandemic.
Inflation Is Real- and So Scams
As a matter of fact, a lot of Americans are stretched. As food, rent and healthcare costs are rising, vulnerable are the low-income earning families, and retirees on a fixed budget.
The Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) of 2025 is a minor solution, and people argue that it does not even benefit them to match the real-life rise of prices. Although the development of policies such as Trump dividend in DOGE addresses this predicament, there is still no tangible federal course of action to deliver direct economic stimulus on the spot.
In the meantime, fraudsters are riding the perplexity. X (previously Twitter) users have complained of receiving phony text messages, emails, and links offering to send them checks in advance requesting their bank account qualifications of the hypothetical 2,000 dollars. On some occasions, they even request personal information such as bank account accounts or Social Security numbers.
IRS highly discourages the process of replying to unsolicited messages, and every person is encouraged to visit irs.gov to receive updates.

Note: Though you may have filed for a tax extension, subsequently you cannot use that to claim the unclaimed stimulus checks after April 15, 2025. IRS has clearly asserted that unclaimed payments of earlier rounds are now returned to the U.S. treasury.
Final Thoughts
Although the thought of the fourth 2,000 stimulus check has been catching up over the internet, there is nothing official proving their existence. Neither the IRS, the Treasury nor Congress have spoken on a new series of Economic Impact Payments.
These rumors will be rumors until actual bills are proposed and become law. In case you are in hard financial states, consider the help of the state programs, tax credits, or hire a financial counselor.
And what is the most important, be suspicious of frauds. Anything on the face of the earth that is too good to be true, especially in a social media world, is what it is.
